Concrete Mats

Erosion and Scouring

Articulated Concrete Block Mats

Articulated concrete mats are flexible in two (2) directions and can easily be adapted to any type of terrain or structure. They form a wide and solid cover that remains flexible at all times and stays in place even in areas with strong sea currents, in wave action and in unstable seabed conditions. The mattresses are durable and withstand temperature fluctuations in freshwater and marine environments.

Uses

Articulated concrete mats are used to repair scour along wharves. They can also be used to protect against structural erosion; protect underwater pipes, culvert outlets and overpass abutments; divert water; and control river erosion, as well as to control marshy areas and/or prepare them for the development of a hiking trail.

D - Choice of Concrete

LEED-compliant ready-mix concrete enhances the sustainability of an articulated mat. High-performance concrete is made with cement containing 5% to 10% silica fume. Its compressive strength exceeds 50 MPa. We offer various high-performance concrete mixes for which resistance development can be controlled over the very short term.

Environment: A Green Choice

An articulated concrete mat’s unique design helps to even out the seabed by allowing sand and plant matter to settle between the blocks making up the mat.

Erosion is slowed when marine vegetation gains a foothold. Increasingly abundant vegetation will promote sedimentation and enhance the stability of the area where mats are used.

Furthermore, the materials used in the manufacture of mats are durable and non-biodegradable in freshwater and marine environments.

Features

Articulated concrete mats are quick and easy to install. Typically, commercial divers install mats using a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), positioning them above the area where they are to be installed and then guiding them to their final position.

Since articulated concrete mats are easy to deploy, it takes fewer commercial divers and less barge and floating equipment time to install them. It’s no overstatement to say that quick installation cuts commercial diver and equipment requirements by two-thirds compared to traditional sand or cement bags. And, articulated concrete mats are much more durable.
